| History of this Site |
The concept for this site was born when a group of us at West End Community Ventures were launching
Ottawa-Carleton's first Green
Community initiative. We wanted to better our understanding of how to improve our own
program's impact. In securing funding from the Ontario and Canadian governments, we were
encouraged - and enabled - to step back from the day-to-day urgencies of our particular
program and to take a broader and longer view.
We published a workbook on what we found. It included 25 residential case studies of
communities from across North America whose programs we had studied. It also developed
further the community-based social marketing framework that had been developed by Doug
McKenzie-Mohr, and published by NRTEE in "Promoting a Sustainable Future: An
Introduction to Community-Based Social Marketing".
Our workbook was subsequently re-edited and published by Canada's National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy
(NRTEE) . To find out more about this workbook or to order it on-line, go to
RenoufBooks.
Note: Use the Search button at the top of Renouf's page to search for "Tools of Change".
The workbook had been designed so that it could eventually evolve into an interactive web site. Health Canada enabled us to make that happen, and to expand the scope to include health promotion. We now invite others to join with us in further developing and promoting the site, so that it can become an even better resource for program planners and implementers across the globe.

In addition, we are grateful to the many people who helped with the preparation of the workbook on which this site is based. First of all, Lily Weinstock, and Evy and Abby Kassirer gave great support to this work on a daily basis over a long period. David Shackletons solid friendship and his assistance in writing, editing and laying out early drafts helped us to get through a number of key stages. Sandra Mark helped conceive the project and kept it grounded in the day-to-day realities of grassroots community work. Drew Blackwell provided advice and inspiration and helped organize the multi-stakeholder planning sessions. Jim Robar, Wendy Walker, Keith Collins, Kathy Killinger, Pat Dolan, Carla Doucet, and Elizabeth Crocker showed early confidence in the project and supported the work to help make the book a reality. Sue Ann Rothwell of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) provided, on behalf of the Federal Government, thoughtful guidance and ensured that our efforts could remain focused on the work at hand. And thanks to Edwina Smith and the others at Allium Consulting Group Inc. who did the final editing, design and layout.
Ron Levi of Emdash Communications, Kelly Kilpatrick of Viridis Environmental, Irena Mandaric and Wendy Walker helped with researching and writing the case studies in the workbook. Sue McKenzie-Mohr helped at various stages from preliminary research to final editing. Many community organizations served as case studies and participated in our research. The following, in particular, helped us refine the content, by organizing the first five workshops based on the workbook:
Many individuals reviewed drafts of the Workbook and provided valuable suggestions for improvement:
